One-on-one Medicare counseling and assistance. Meet with a Suffolk County RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) volunteer from HIICAP (Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program). Registration is required. Must be Medicare eligible. Appointments are 30 minutes long.

Congregate Meals- Lunch is available to eligible Town of Islip senior citizens at our six nutrition centers, Monday thru Friday. Transportation may be available.

Living with Loss Group – A group that meets weekly for 8 weeks for adults who have had a person in their life die of cancer. Next Steps Bereavement Group – A monthly group for adults who are entering the next stage in their grieving process. Most members experienced their loss over a year ago.

With the help of local volunteers and partners, we’re installing FREE smoke alarms in homes that don’t have them or need updated alarms (10 yr battery life) as well as educating people about fire safety. Also will answer questions for parents who have questions on immunizations needed for school or receive referrals to get ongoing pediatric primary care.

Boxes of new paperback books are prepared for use and distribution to area service agencies who serve a large number of children and teens unable to attend library programs. Designed for community organizations to facilitate their own "Story Hour" for the children and youth they serve.

Independent Living is a member of the Statewide Systems Advocacy Network, a group of eighteen independent living centers throughout New York State which collaborates with other disability organizations to ensure that legislation affecting people with disabilities is introduced, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor.

For income eligible women who are pregnant, postpartum or breast feeding, infants from birth to one year, and children under age 5. The program provides monthly checks to purchase selected foods in WIC-approved food markets, nutrition/health education, and referrals for health care and other services. Program offered at WIC offices in Brewster, Carmel, Cold Spring, and Mahopac. Offers prenatal classes.

The building department monitors new building conditions and construction, and oversees the maintenance of older multi-family structures. Also enforces the state and local building codes, housing standards and ordinances, to the review of applications for permits of new buildings, repairs, alterations, signs, and rooming houses, in addition to electrical and plumbing work. The building department accepts complaints from tenants about conditions the landlord fails to resolve.

Provides temporary shelter to homeless families, singles and childless couples. The office has a contractual relationship with not-for-profit agencies for the provision of case management services, shelter facilities, transitional residences, and emergency apartments.
