Services include: Comprehensive autism diagnostic evaluations (for toddlers, children, adolescents and adults); Individualized psychotherapy (for children, adolescents, and adults with high-functioning ASD); Social skills groups (for all ages); and Milieu Communication Therapy (a language intervention focused on building prelinguistics and overall functional communication). The institute also is committed to providing ongoing support for family members and caregivers of children with ASD. These services include individualized counseling, outreach support, education about the needs of children with ASD, and assistance in utilizing community resources. The institute is also working on developing support groups for siblings of children and adults with ASD. In addition to the services provided, the institute is also active in a number of different research programs. Currently, the clinic is conducting a study on the effectiveness of Milieu Communication Therapy (MCT) in young children with ASD. There are also ongoing studies on the effectiveness of social skills intervention for children with ASD; the potential auto-immune connection for children with ASD; and possible Etiological relationships among the more than 100 families the institute has served thus far. Offers university affiliated resource center that brings research and practice together in community settings. RCASD Old Westbury provides evidence-based training and support to families and professionals, and through ongoing research, contributes knowledge to the field of autism spectrum disorders. RCASD Old Westbury provides high quality autism spectrum resources to individuals and families affected by autism, and to school personnel and community providers. RCASD functions with an overarching goal of identifying, disseminating, and assisting in the implementation of practices to build capacity to improve services and outcomes for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders. As a member of partnership of six university-affiliated programs across New York State, the RCASD at Old Westbury is part of a regional model approach demonstrated to be a successful paradigm around the nation for providing services and resources to families and professionals across the state that may not had access to cost-effective services in the past. Conducts research, provides education, and delivers supports to better serve autistic and neurodiverse individuals in the classroom, workplace, and beyond. In partnership with Anderson Center for Autism, CAARES is working within SUNY Empire to build an Autistic Supportive College, deliver community and professional outreach, and provide career support for autistic and neurodiverse college students. It seeks to provide workforce development for professionals and business in increasing inclusive practices, conduct innovative research with and in support of autistic and neurodiverse individuals, and continuing to work in partnership with autistic and neurodivergent individuals and organizations across the globe. Parents, teachers, employers, and service providers need access to up-to-date, accurate information about autism. Working with partners across New York State and around the world, the center will provide that information, as well as education and training to parents, professionals, employers, community organizations, and others who support autistic and neurodiverse individuals.
