In addition to the Arnold & Joan Saltzman Fine Art Building, Nassau County Museum of Art includes the Sculpture Park, Formal Gardens of historic importance, the Pinetum, ponds, woodlands, an architecturally-significant restored trellis, rare specimen trees, and marked walking trails. Serves more than 18,000 Long Island school children and their teachers who visit the museum each year for exhibition tours and art-related activities. The Education Department additionally sponsors extensive programming for children, adults and family groups and also offers professional development to Long Island's educators. A musical composition 10-week writing workshop in which students are selected from the After-School Music Program to work with professional composers and musicians. This program provides a unique experience for self-expression under the guidance of mentors of the highest quality. Over the course of the program, professional musicians help the children understand the sounds, range, effects, and capabilities of many orchestral instruments. Final pieces are performed by professional musicians at a concert held in early spring.
