Program serves disabled students, ages 11 through 21, who require highly intensive management needs due to conduct disorders. The program provides ongoing educational instruction that incorporates the Common Core Learning Standards. The services of a consulting psychiatrist are available for those conduct disordered students who also have psychiatric needs. In addition, strong emphasis is placed upon remedial instruction, vocational training and having each student's parents and family become part of the treatment. An after-school program is offered for students who are unable to attend a normal full-day school due to the students' disability(ies). This option is also suitable for students who are employed during the school day and who require after-school educational programming to complete their high school studies. Related services, support services and psychiatric consultation services are also offered for students who require these specialized services.

Emphasis is placed on improving cognition, sensory motor skills development and use of adaptive equipment to aid movement and independence. Students placed in the 12:1:4 class component are non-ambulatory and are dependent upon staff for meeting their needs throughout the school day. Classroom instruction is provided with hand over hand assistance. Related services of speech, occupational therapy and physical therapy are provided on a group push-in basis. All students are assessed using the New York State Alternate Assessment. Programs are offered at various locations.

Bixhorn Technical Center, the Islip Career Center and Harry B. Ward Technical Center serve high school students who are 15.5 (15 years and 6 months) of age by September 1st until the age of 21. Special Career Education (SCE) creates opportunities for all students by providing them with the technical and academic skills needed to prepare for future employment and a successful path to college or other post-secondary programs. SCE provides technical training to prepare students for a successful career. The structured training gives students the tools needed to be successful in a job after high school and/or further post-secondary education. Mainstreamed hearing impaired students are eligible for this complete language oriented, academic support program in their home schools. Based upon individual need, certified teachers of the deaf provide intensive language development, auditory training, speech correction, lip reading and academic tutoring program as well as sign language, manual alphabet and lip reading. This service is coordinated with the curriculum thus, requiring close cooperation with the teacher in the home school.

The instructional program, which is aligned to the New York State Standards for Students with Severe Disabilities and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards, builds confidence and capabilities of students and focuses on developing communication skills and personal independence. Research-based methodologies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), visual strategies, the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), augmentative communications systems, functional behavioral assessment and positive behavioral supports are utilized in this program. The Rosemary Kennedy School consists of the elementary, middle and high school classes as well as district-based classes which provide mainstreaming opportunities for students. Community-based instruction is an essential part of the curriculum and compliments traditional classroom learning. Students participate in recreational activities (libraries, bowling), life skills (grocery shopping, restaurants), volunteer work sites (Mercy Hospital, Hofstra University) and vocational enclaves in the community (fast food restaurants, retail stores). Each student is educated by an interdisciplinary team comprised of the classroom teacher, teacher aides, psychologist, social worker, related service personnel, curriculum teachers and administrators. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's education through daily communication notebooks, conferences, visits, parent training sessions and parent support groups. Serves youngsters ages 5-18 who are diagnosed as having a severe emotional disorder and who need extensive psychiatric support. Diagnostic categories include, but are not limited to: attention deficit, anxiety, schizophrenia, paranoia and affective autism spectrum disorders. Services include 6:1:1 or 8:1:1 placement with appropriate support staff at the Sayville Academic Center and 8:1:1 placement with appropriate support staff at the Sequoya High School and Jefferson Academic Center. Psychiatric, rehabilitation, social work, and psychological services are offered. Students who no longer need intense psychiatric support can remain at their respective centers and receive counseling from Eastern Suffolk BOCES staff.

Provides a NYSED approved article 81 residential school for youth ages 5-21 years old. Includes a 12 month program with a 6:1:3 ratio as well as speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy and counseling. New York State certified special education school that was created to accommodate the needs of the children and adolescents with developmental disabilities who reside at The Robert J. McMahon Children’s Center in Nassau County, Long Island. Small class sizes and student-centered instruction tailor each student’s education to his/her individual needs and abilities.

Provides a dynamic, child-centered, educational experience at the Jerusalem Avenue School, for students’ ages 5 to 10 with learning, behavioral and developmental disabilities. This center is staffed by certified special educators dedicated to providing a high-quality, individualized learning environment. Class ratios, as determined by student need, are 6:1:1 or 9:1:2. Reading, language arts, math, science, and social studies are aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards and address students' cognitive levels and learning styles. Learning, behavioral or developmental disabilities that interfere with students’ abilities to succeed in general education are addressed by social and emotional supports integrated into classroom activities. A school-wide growth recognition PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support) program addresses social and emotional needs and a specific plan is developed for each child by the child's teacher and counselor. Social learning skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum and students work as a team to support each other in social growth. Parents are kept informed concerning their child's progress and are encouraged to be active partners in the education of their child by reinforcing what the child learns in school at home. Supportive and related services are available as needed. Psychologists and social workers work closely with students in individual and group sessions to support the development of positive social skills and behaviors and are available to parents on a group or individual basis. The Jerusalem Avenue School also provides the Intensive Support Program (ISP) through a collaborative program developed by Nassau BOCES and the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center for students with significant emotional difficulties with an on-site psychiatrist, psychiatric social workers and coordinator. Services include psychiatric supervision and ongoing parent counseling to address emotional and behavioral issues that interfere with the achievement of educational goals. Provides an educational program to support children with chronic or life threatening illness that requires treatment at the hospital for an extended period of time. The length of stay varies, during which time a full academic curriculum is provided by Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

The students serviced within the included programs experience learning disabilities but exhibit minimal to no behavioral concerns. Instruction in these classes emphasizes a modified Common Core Curriculum, behavior management, and self-advocacy and social skills, while also providing for the opportunity to be integrated with the mainstream population for special subject classes, lunch, assemblies and academic subjects when appropriate. Consultations and trainings are designed to assist staff to work effectively at sites with the most challenging students on the autism spectrum. These services are added to a District’s Commitment Form/student IEP when the service of a behavioral specialist or autism consultant is recommended by the CSE for implementation on a regular basis over a period of time. Autism consultants will address applied behavior analysis strategies, behavioral strategies, and educational strategies. Parent Training provides a bridge between home and school programs and can assist parents in utilizing strategies in the home that are consistent with those used in school to facilitate student progress. Home ABA Services are designed to meet the needs of component districts for students with autism spectrum disorders to provide for continuity and generalization. Methodologies include applied behavior analysis, discrete trial instruction, and task analysis. Progress is tracked and monitored to emphasize effective collaboration and consistency between home, school, and community.

Offers Assistive Technology Assessments for students with physical, orthopedic, communication, or learning disabilities who attend local district schools. Either individual assessments or a combination of assessments are provided. Alternative Augmentative Communication Evaluations are provided by speech language pathologists who determine the most appropriate communication method for the student. During the evaluation, the speech language pathologist identifies one or more appropriate devices that might be used. Technology Access Evaluations are provided by occupational and/or physical therapists working collaboratively with a special education teacher. The evaluation states the student's cognitive ability, readiness for computer use, and provides recommendations for the purchase of equipment and for the initial training of staff in its use.
