Eviction Assistance: Provides help to low income who are qualified for subsidized housing and section 8 choice vouchers. For those who may not be qualified for subsidized/section 8, provide older adults, veterans, domestic violence, LGBQT, breast cancer, or individuals diagnosed with AIDS who may be a target for eviction. Landlord/Tenant Dispute Resolution: Aids individuals struggling with their landlord for reasons ranging from eviction, living conditions, recurring problems, etc. Foreclosure Assistance: helps advocate for individuals with mortgage foreclosure with guidance through the legal process and representation, if needed.

Hears cases which involve metropolitan area landlord and tenant issues.

Provides free legal advice, counseling, advocacy and representation for low income individuals in civil (non-criminal) matters.

##RENTRY##

Provides mediation and arbitration services for community, parent/child, divorce, custody and visitation, and juvenile issues. A neutral third person, the mediator, facilitates discussions between the parties. The mediator helps participants develop or refine their communication skills, and teaches school children techniques for resolving disagreements. Mediators are trained conflict resolution volunteers.

Supervised law students facilitate mediations in active landlord-tenant cases in Suffolk County District Court. Representation is provided by upper-level law students working under the close supervision of experienced lawyers who are clinical professors. There is no charge for clinic representation. However, the clinics have limited resources and cannot take every case, no matter how deserving. Clinic staff members meet with potential clients by appointment only. Please do not visit the Law Center unless you have first contacted the Office of Clinical Programs at 631-761-7080 to see if you are eligible.

Provides neutral alternative dispute resolution programs to help people solve conflicts, no matter the situation or setting. The Center does not provide direct legal representation or advocacy services but can provide referrals to the agencies providing these services. Mediation can:

• Help parties with civil and family legal issues who are looking for an alternative to court
• Help couples looking to get divorced and or separated
• Help landlords and tenants work out non-emergency issues
• Help parents and schools agree on special education matters
• Help employees and employers resolve conflict
• Help neighbors restore harmony in the community
• Help families handle issues with teens, siblings, and aging adults
• Help parents work out custody and visitation arrangements

Services are offered virtually, over the phone, and in person. In addition to mediation programs, the Center collaborates with local civil legal services providers to offer holistic legal services for victims of crime in Erie, Niagara, and Genesee Counties. Center staff will work with victims to identify legal issues and to discuss pathways to achieving justice. The Center also offers Education and Training workshops that provide skills-based trainings, consultation, and coaching services.

The Valley Rural Housing Corporation offers tenant intervention, landlord intervention, lease review, court assistance, eviction intervention, budget counseling, code repair assistance with landlord as well as grants and loans.

ITU is a union by and for the tenants of Ithaca, to protect tenant rights and advance tenant collective power. It offers help with tenancy issues and has a helpline where volunteer tenants with experience can offer solidarity and limited support. It has an Upstate NY Tenant's Rights Guide (https://www.ithacatu.org/rights) available online. It also advocates for public policy that protects tenants.Winter 2025/2026- Community Mutual Aid and Warming Center, every evening 5pm-9pm at the First Baptist Church, 309 North Cayuga Street. Hot tea and warm place to hang out. Supplies available may include hand warmers, socks, non perishable snacks, blankets, gloves, bandaids, etc. Visitors may also request items as needed.

Provides legal assistance to persons who experience problems with public benefits programs that are administered by the local Department of Social Services, including: Welfare (TANF and Safety Net), Medicaid, Food Stamps (SNAP), Child Care Assistance, HEAP, Emergency Shelter for the homeless, Unemployment insurance appeals and overpayments, other emergency assistance programs. Also assist low-income households in establishing Supplemental Needs Trusts to eliminate the Medicaid spend down and assist homeless families to obtain rent supplements from DSS to enable families to leave the shelters or retain permanent housing.
