District Court in the Cohalan Court Complex, Central Islip handles: Criminal Court; trial jurisdiction over misdemeanors, violations and infractions, preliminary jurisdiction over felonies, traffic tickets charging a crime, Domestic Violence, Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Veterans Court, Human Trafficing Court.

Provides a service, in collaboration with 2 other agencies (My Sisters' Place and Westchester Hispanic Coalition) to offer free legal services for poverty level residents or those who are victims of domestic violence for consumer disputes, housing, education, benefits, domestic violence, orders of protection, custody, child support, family law, including citizenship applications, work authorizations or other immigration issues.

Provides the following services to custodial parents and their children, to find absent parents, establish legal fatherhood for a child, obtain support for their children, including a provision for medical support, and enforce the terms of the Family Court/Supreme Court orders of support.

Provides direct services and referral services to outside providers to prevent children from being placed in foster care. Referral required. Please call for additional information. Through a combination of center-based workshops and counseling, SCO works closely with families who have experienced crises and helps prevent crisis situations in the future. We offer individual and family counseling services both on site and at home that help to ensure that all families get healthier and happier starts. These efforts have been highly successful at reducing foster care placements as well as accelerating family reunification when a placement was unavoidable. Services available in Spanish.

Assists custodial parents and their children with locating absent parents, establishing paternity, obtaining support for their children, and enforcing the terms of the Family Court/Supreme Court orders of support.

Provides services to all victims and survivors of domestic violence, including victims and survivors of intimate partner violence and family violence. Operates a confidential shelter and offers extensive support services. Advocates for victims and survivors when interacting with law enforcement and prosecution as well as assist victims and survivors with law enforcement and prosecution. Services include advocacy, accompaniment, information and referral, support, and extensive safety planning. Provides therapy, which includes individual and group domestic violence education. Another service is the counseling, specifically designed for the unique circumstances that victims and survivors encounter. Offers The Law Project which provides consultation and representation on civil-legal matters to income-eligible victims, and survivors within the county.

Provides legal advocacy including information, referrals or accompaniment to: Family Court, Criminal Court, Domestic Violence Court, Sex Offense Court, Integrated Domestic Violence Court, police, probation department and District Attorney's office. Petitions and accompaniment for orders of protection. Also provides assistance to victims and family members who are entitled to compensation through the New York State Crime Victims Board. Provides referral, application process and support.

Assists those parents who need help to attain child support monies from the parent who has become delinquent in their child support payments.

Provides legal representation to victims of domestic violence in Suffolk County relating to family law matters, including obtaining orders of protection and custody. A domestic violence program comprised of advocates and social workers located within the Erie County District Attorney's Office. Provides supportive counseling, resources, case management, and safety planning to survivors of Intimate Partner Violence. Specializes in providing advocacy within criminal courts and helping survivors review their options regardless of whether they have a criminal case. Free services are provided to anyone who identifies themselves as a victim of Domestic Violence. Services include BE SAFE Hotline; court accompaniment and advocacy; counseling; crisis case management; help with safety planning; information and referrals for counseling, housing, and other programs; help communicating with the Assistant District Attorney and police; help with medical, housing, employment and financial needs; education and training about abuse; assistance in filing Family Court Family Offense petitions; and VINE program registration for offender release information.

Provides mediation and arbitration services for community, parent/child, divorce, custody and visitation, and juvenile issues. A neutral third person, the mediator, facilitates discussions between the parties. The mediator helps participants develop or refine their communication skills, and teaches school children techniques for resolving disagreements. Mediators are trained conflict resolution volunteers.

Provides a state-wide Child Support Enforcement Helpline to obtain information about their child's support cases and the services offered. If a caller needs information that is specific to a county, then the caller is given the appropriate person and number to call at the county level.

Provides services for children who have been sexually or physically abused, and their non offending caregivers. Works directly with law enforcement and child protective services to investigate allegations of child abuse. Offers facilities to conduct child interviews, medical exams, mental health counseling and after care in a child-friendly environment. Services available on a referral-basis only.

Provides access to various services for victims of domestic violence and unsafe relationships, including advocacy, safety planning and danger assessment, crisis intervention and short-term counseling, forensic medical care, essential item boutique, shelter referrals, court accompaniment, legal assistance with criminal and civil court matters, and linkage to community partners and services. Partners with various agencies on-site. Provides community outreach presentations and education upon request. Does not serve perpetrators.

Provides neutral alternative dispute resolution programs to help people solve conflicts, no matter the situation or setting. The Center does not provide direct legal representation or advocacy services but can provide referrals to the agencies providing these services. Mediation can:

• Help parties with civil and family legal issues who are looking for an alternative to court
• Help couples looking to get divorced and or separated
• Help landlords and tenants work out non-emergency issues
• Help parents and schools agree on special education matters
• Help employees and employers resolve conflict
• Help neighbors restore harmony in the community
• Help families handle issues with teens, siblings, and aging adults
• Help parents work out custody and visitation arrangements

Services are offered virtually, over the phone, and in person. In addition to mediation programs, the Center collaborates with local civil legal services providers to offer holistic legal services for victims of crime in Erie, Niagara, and Genesee Counties. Center staff will work with victims to identify legal issues and to discuss pathways to achieving justice. The Center also offers Education and Training workshops that provide skills-based trainings, consultation, and coaching services.

Handles matrimonial cases including child custody, visitation, child support, alimony, and paternity. Referral required. Appointment required.

Provides mediation for the following issues: Divorce & Separation, Family Decision Making, Marital Disputes, Parenting Coordination and Prenuptial Agreements.
