In April 2015, the Urban League of Long Island convened a meeting of Regional Leaders to have a dialogue regarding strategies to correct economic and social injustices; advocate for equity and equal opportunities; create jobs; promote equity in education; and improve community development in underserved areas. A group of Black Leaders then began the work that created a black collaborative movement. This group is currently operating as the State of Black Long Island (SOBLI) Equity Council.
The vision of the State of Black Long Island (SOBLI) Equity Council is to advocate for economic, political and social equity for Long Island’s Black residents with a goal to positively impact the entire Long Island region. SOBLI envisions just and fair inclusion for Black Long Islanders demonstrated by full participation in the social, economic and political activities that ensure prosperity.
