Benefits include a reliable source of trained workers, less turnover and improved employee relations. An apprenticeship training program begins with a detailed job analysis. Then a training program is designed to ensure the apprentice masters the full spectrum of job functions, attains the knowledge necessary to exercise independent judgement, and subscribes to the highest standards of professional conduct. To become an apprentice, you must be 18 years old, or 16 years old with parental approval. The length of training varies from one to six years, depending on the occupation. Apprenticeship programs are conducted by employers, jointly by employers and unions, or by groups of employers. To learn more about this program, call your local Department of Labor office.
